Holidays were discussed at a meeting of the Vimma network

The purpose of SuPer’s Vimma network is to help practical nurses with immigrant backgrounds to become part of the union’s activities.

Vimma network met again in Pasila, Helsinki in May. The topic was annual holiday: What is the holiday year, how much holiday do you get, and which national holidays don’t spend your holidays?

Since the number of holidays varies by collective agreement, it is sometimes necessary to seek advice from a trade union. As a member of SuPer you receive advice from your own shop steward or from the experts in SuPeri’s office.

Naoko Nousiainen finds Vimma’s meeting useful.

– I got a lot of new information about the holidays. For example, I didn’t know that earned vacations would stay if I changed employers within public sector, says Naoko who works for the City of Helsinki.

Matias Osipow, Organization Specialist at SuPer, and Niina Laitinen, Contract Specialist, are happy that both new and old acquaintances came to the meeting of the network.

– It is great to see how the network brings together SuPer’s members from different backgrounds to discuss and share their experiences. Such meetings create a sense of community and provide concrete support for working life issues, Matias says.

Vimma’s meeting was also attended by Päivi Salmén-Gren, a member of SuPer’s executive committee, who serves as the chief shop steward in the City of Helsinki and as the chairman of SuPer’s local union branch of the City of Helsinki (814). Päivi welcomed SuPer’s members from Helsinki to the sports event at the Aurinkolahti beach in Vuosaari.

Cooperation between the local union branches and the Vimma network could be increased.

– It would be a good idea for the actors of local union branch to visit Vimma regularly and thereby get more new members for the local events, Päivi encourages.
